What Exactly is Gaslighting?

Gaslighting is basically a technique or tool that somebody uses on you to make you think you are crazy. The term comes from back in the day when there weren’t electric street lights, but there were gas lights. A husband wanted his wife to think that she was going insane, so every night he would turn the gas down a little bit at a time.

So, she keeps asking him, is the light getting dimmer? And he would say, “No, it’s not”, and she thinks she’s losing her mind. What does this look like in the present day? It could be a friend or partner that says, “No, I didn’t say that!”, when you know they did.

So, what do I do when I feel like I’m being gaslit?

  1. Well, audiotape and videotape all of your conversations
  2. Do not engage in an argument with the person. You don’t need to debate it or try to convince them of your reality.

So, what do I do if I’m in a relationship with someone who constantly gaslighting me?

Well. If it’s a constant thing, you may want to rethink being in that relationship with that person, because most likely it will not change. So, your reality is your reality. Your truth is your truth. You don’t need to convince anyone of it. Stay firm, stay grounded, and stay safe.
